10 uur vertrokken richting de Picos.
De Picos de Europa is een onderdeel van het Cantabrisch gebergte dat zich uitstrekt langs de noordkust van Spanje, op de grens van Asturië, Cantabrië en Castilië-en-León. De hoogste toppen zijn een groot deel van het jaar bedekt met sneeuw. Voor zeelui waren die witte toppen een baken: Europa was in zicht. Vandaar de naam Picos de Europa.
We hebben besloten om hier 2 nachten een hotelletje te nemen want dan kunnen we de auto gebruiken om meerdere plaatsen te bezoeken. Hotel Mirador de Cabrales. Ze spreken hier geen Engels dus Google translate heeft ons een beetje geholpen en verder met handen en voeten.
Met de auto een mooie route uitgezocht richting Fuente Fé.
Prachtige vergezichten maar de weg werd slechter en slechter. Grote losse keien en 2x raden wat er gebeurde. We zaten vast. De auto een stukje achteruit laten glijden en weer proberen. Helaas zat toen de fietsendrager vast in een rots. We konden dus niet meer achteruit maar ook niet vooruit. Vast, vast en nog eens vast in ‘the middle of nowhere’ ?. En wat schetst onze verbazing……een motorrijder. Onze reddende engel. Jaco gas geven en hij en Janet duwen. En ja hoor, we kwamen los. Een stukje achteruit gegleden en daar konden we gelukkig draaien en tien maar de hele weg terug gereden.
Na ons hachelijke avontuur kwamen we in Sotres terecht. Eerst maar eens lunchen bij Peña Castil. Het was ondertussen 15 uur. De hoeveelheid en de grootte van de porties waren niet normaal. Als een tonnetje zijn we naar buiten gerold.
Na de lunch nog een keer proberen om via een andere weg in Fuente Fé te komen. Onderweg 20 minuten stil gestaan ivm wegwerkzaamheden. En je raadt het al: 18 uur kwamen we aan. En hoe laat sluit in juni de kabelbaan? Juist ja, exact 18 uur. Toen maar teruggedraaid en naar het pittoreske bergdorpje Potes gereden. Nauwe straatjes met keitjes en steegjes kronkelen door het dorp en langs het water. Je loopt langs stenen muren en over prachtige oude bruggen. Jammer dat het regende.
Op het terras van Don Pelayo hebben we iets gedronken. Nog een uurtje rijden naar ons hotel. 21.30 waren we er. Mooie Spaanse tijd om te dineren in het restaurant van het hotel.
De dag kort samengevat: pech dat we vastzaten, pech dat we 20 minuten stil hebben gestaan, pech dat de kabelbaan al dicht was en pech dat het veel geregend heeft. Morgen willen we een route gaan wandelen. Alvast duimen voor mooi weer??.
